Have you looked into Thunderbird? It's a Mozilla program, and they seem to try to make their stuff cross-platform. They might have some Exchange interface solution.

Ubuntu comes RDP ready (even to a windows machine). Applications -> Internet -> Terminal Server Client. That acts just like Remote Desktop, but with more functionality (it also supports VNC).

The only way you're going to be able to figure stuff out is to dual boot and actually play with it. Even if you install Thunderbird into Windows and get Exchange working that way, it doesn't guarantee it won't crap out in Linux.

Also I suggest burning the Live CD and booting your computer on that (just burn the Ubuntu CD from their website, Live CD is standard on there). That will let you know exactly what drivers will and won't work when you hit the "install" button. That way if you end up needing to figure out how to, say, fix your NIC, you can do it before you're committed. Also, your particular setup might require lots of driver fixes and that might change your mind for going to linux at this time. Although Ubuntu has a crazy amount of drivers in the default installation. The only things I've really had to play with was my Audigy ZS2 soundcard at home, and I had to do some Xorg adjustments to get my two widescreen monitors to display correctly at work. Xorg is one of the last pains in the ass (in my opinion), and I think it's being adjusted for the Gibson release of ubuntu that will probably be released in October (if they maintain their "new release every 6 months" track record)

as far as SAN and backups are concerned, we have management stations and servers dedicated to management of those machines. as long as there existed an RDP client (mstsc.exe ftmfw) i'll be fine with that.

and no, i dont want to have to install vnc to do RDP, god what a waste

the no exchange usage is a big issue. i have to have that functionality, and evolution only has simple OWC access, which will not cut it for me.

I run winblows on my lappy, ubuntu on my PCs (work and home).

I run remedy in WINE. The only thing I have problem with is the Remedy email system, which you guys don't use.

We don't use exchange at Tech (at least, not as a whole... some departments do, but not OIT). I use IMAP in Thunderbird to work with SPECTRUM email, which is home grown as far as I can tell. Have you looked around online for this at all?

As for calendar support, we're currently changing systems. Right now I merge my work calendar into google calendar, and I hope that process becomes easier with our new system. I like google calendar a lot because I already have it integrating with my phone (it sets itself to vibrate automagically when I'm in class or a meeting).

I suggest dual booting as a test for your specific programs. Look for open source/linux versions where you can, and try out WINE where you can't. If you can get all your required programs working like I have, it turns into a superior system in my opinion. Of course, my #1 program used is SSH for remote access to switches and routers, and cu for local access to switches and routers. I let remedy tell me when I have a ticket, and we have a fully functional web interface that I use sometimes. Usually I only log into remedy to CLOSE a ticket, but that's how most of my tickets are (the request is made, I fulfill request, I close ticket).

All of our SAN backup guys use Linux on their machines, but I don't know what special purposes you have for the programs you listed. Java-based programs probably have a linux version.

I think you shouldn't go to Linux if you need IE... that's simply not going to happen.

This will tell you how to do just about anything:

http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Feisty

This is probably mostly for Josh, but I have some questions for you since you run Ubuntu on your work laptop:

Do you interface with exchange? (we talking WINE + Outlook?, or that gay Evolution exchange support through the OWC?) It's getting to the point where I'd REQUIRE calendar support.
How do you run remedy?
I need to run particular programs (nortel java based device manager, metaip client, juniper/contivity vpn client, and most importantly internet explorer)
do you dual boot? can you write to NTFS shares or is support for that still borked?
as i think of more questions i'll post them.
