   I thought I'd throw this idea out there to see if there's any interest:

   Do any of you guys have any interest in putting together a study group that meets every 1-3 weeks? It could be as little as helping each other pass that next certification test, or as much as a "user group" type meeting - formal presentations each meeting on a different topic.

   I've pretty much tapped out the resources that I have at work. My coworkers and I have gotten so busy that we rarely get to spend time during the work day "goofing" around in the lab.

   Venue for this can be workplace (if permitted), homes (presentations on big screen TV), or virtual (think GoToMyPC and Skype).

   I'd like to keep the virtuals at a minimum just because people tend to get distracted with other things. Maybe a virtual every 3rd or 4th time if necessary.

   Joe - we could include you on the virtuals or even via the same medium for "in-person" meet ups.

   Michael - this would be good for you to gauge your interest in IT and see what area you might be interested in tackling.

   Any thoughts or comments on this would be greatly appreciated.

   BTW, we don't have to call it RaydU... just threw that up there to catch the eye.

   I think it's a neat idea, but I just don't think I would have time to participate reliably.

   Perhaps if it were executed a little differently... maybe leveraging Google Groups (or the yet-to-go-public Google Wave) or some other collaboration assisting program/method.

   Just a suggestion. It'd make scheduling easier (which we always have trouble with).

   I'm all for that. My schedule is also fairly flexible. So if there are other scheduling constraints that you guys have, I'd like to try to work around those.

   I would still like to hear from some others as to whether or not you would be interested.

   like going to the gym, i always start these types of things with good intentions, but invariably it falls to the wayside. i dont even have an idea what i would study and/or get certified in that would significantly help me out. any ideas?

   It should be a rather easy one for you to get. 49% to pass. Test is $150.

   Other ideas:

   The two of us could also take a deep dive into FCoE. I'm pretty sure you're going to come across it very soon.

   Cisco and Brocade are starting to publish certs and accreditations based on FCoE on both Nexus and Fabric OS product lines.

   I was thinking of having the first meeting the week of October 12th. Would that work for everyone? What night is best for everyone? What time?

   We can order pizzas, sandwiches, or whatever. Or we can all just bring our own dinner. Whatever works.

   In regards to format, I was thinking of doing something like a "lunch-and-learn" or "user group" type of meeting. We would spend the first 30 minutes doing a sub-informal presentation on whatever technology that we find interesting that week. And then spend the next hour+ doing random Q&A.

   Or, another way is to have a forum where everyone submits their questions ahead of time and we build an agenda based on those topics.

   The main goal here is to give everyone visibility into fields or topics that you don't come across everyday. It gives us all the deversability and flexibility to change with an every-growing job market and keeps us all from getting pigeon-holed.

   At the same time, it allows us to become even stronger subject matter experts in our current fields by teaching each other what we already know. Because, if you can teach something confidently, then you are going to have to know what you're talking about.

   The point here isn't to create a bunch of IT generalist. It's to create a bunch of strong SMEs that have a holistic view of information technology and have the ability to apply that to their careers.

   I was thinking about hosting the first meeting on October 14th (date is tentative at the moment). Please let me know if that date works for you guys or if another night would be better.

   I might do a 30 minute quick overview of Fibre Channel over Ethernet and the latest and greatest from Cisco, Brocade, and various storage vendors that offer these solutions. Most of you may not see any of this for another year or two. My company has just really started diving into it ourselves.

   The last hour+ can be used for Q&A on randon topics or just discussing what everyone is currently working on - certs or work-related.

   Let me know about the date/time and we'll go from there.

    Looks like I will not be able to do that week either. I'll be out of town for work.
